Classic Mustangs

1964 ½ – 1966

The “classic” Mustang was introduced in April, 1964.

Cars made before September of 1964 are dated as 1964 ½.

1964 ½ models included only the convertible and the coupe.

In September 1964, the Mustang made its film debut in the James Bond film
Goldfinger.

The fastback was introduced during the 1965 model year.

Carroll Shelby introduced the GT-350 fastback models.

Engine options included: 260 V-8 (early), 200 Six Cylinder (4 lug wheels), 200 Horsepower 289 (C-Code), 225 Horsepower 289 (A-Code), and 271 Horsepower 289 (K-Code).

1967 – 1968

The GT-500 joined the Shelby GT-350.

Carroll Shelby also added a convertible model.
A 428 was added in 1968 (the 428 Cobra Jet was fast and a huge success).

1969 – 1970

The Mach I, Boss 302, and Boss 429 were introduced.
Shelby turned the program over to Ford.

The Sportsroof, Coupe, Grande, and Convertible Body styles were introduced.

1971 – 1973

The Boss 429 and Boss 302 models were replaced by the Boss 351.

The 429 was a normal engine option.

Shelby Mustangs ceased production, and the era of the classic Mustang came to a close.
